# What an AI phone call can't do for you

> An AI caller can't prove it's you, won't read out card numbers, Social Security numbers or passwords, won't call people or emergency lines, and can't make a business answer or quote. Banks, carriers and insurers often need the account holder. CallForMe reports these cases plainly instead of calling them a success.

## Why this page exists

Tools that overpromise get people hurt, or at least embarrassed at a front desk. Here's what CallForMe won't do, can't do, and where calls most often fall short, so you know when to use it and when to pick up the phone yourself.

## Things it won't do

- **Pretend to be you, or a person.** Every call opens with "Hi, this is an AI assistant calling for (your name), on a recorded line." If asked, it says it's an AI. It never claims to be the customer, and no human ever places the call for us.
- **Read out sensitive numbers.** No card numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords or PINs, even if your agent sends one mid-call.
- **Go past your limits.** Anything in `constraints` ("don't agree to more than $200", "quotes only, don't book") is a hard line.
- **Call people.** Businesses only. No friends, no telemarketing, no harassment.
- **Call emergency or premium lines.** 911, 988, 211, 311 and other N11 numbers, and 900 and 976 numbers, are blocked. In an emergency, call 911 yourself. To reach the crisis line, call or text 988.
- **Keep calling a business that said stop.** Opt-outs apply to every user, and there are daily caps per number.

## Things it can't do

- **Prove who you are.** Banks, carriers, insurers and pharmacies often need the account holder, a PIN, or security questions. The assistant can wait on hold and patch you in with `transfer_to`; it can't verify for you. See [hold and patch in](/guides/ai-agent-hold-and-patch-in).
- **Make someone answer.** Busy lines, unfamiliar numbers and closed businesses happen. Unanswered calls are free, and `redial` tries again later.
- **Get a price a business won't give.** Many trades won't quote a job they haven't seen. Ask for a range and a visit fee instead. See [why businesses won't quote over the phone](/guides/why-businesses-wont-quote-over-the-phone).
- **Stay on longer than 30 minutes.** A call ends at 30 minutes, including hold.
- **Talk to someone who won't talk to an AI.** Some businesses refuse. The assistant ends politely. See [will a business hang up on an AI call](/guides/will-a-business-hang-up-on-an-ai-call).
- **Call from your own number.** Calls come from +1 (469) 966-0062. Pass a `callback_number` if you want the business to reach you directly.
- **Call outside the US and Canada.**

## Where calls fall short most often

- **Missing details.** The business asks for something the request didn't include and nobody answers in time. The assistant says you'll follow up, and the point shows up in `unanswered_questions`. Fix: run `plan_call` first, and give likely answers up front with `if_asked`.
- **A different offer than you asked for.** "No 7:30, but 8:15 works." If you didn't say what's acceptable, the assistant checks with your agent. Anything it agreed to that differs from your request is listed in `deviations`.
- **Garbled numbers.** Phone lines are noisy. The assistant reads confirmation codes and phone numbers back one character at a time, and the result shows exactly what the business said.

## How it reports a miss

A call that fell short doesn't come back as a success. `outcome.success` is only true when the goal was met, every question was answered, and nothing changed without approval. Otherwise `outcome.type` says what happened (`refused_ai`, `no_help`, `voicemail`, `needs_you` and so on), `business_needed` lists what they wanted that the call couldn't give, and `next_steps` says what to do. If you've signed in with your email, you get the same result by email.

## When to call yourself

- Anything that needs your identity verified and you can't wait on hold.
- Medical or legal conversations where you need to ask follow-ups in real time.
- Anything personal, emotional, or with a friend or family member.

For everything else, the [use cases](/use-cases) are a good place to start, and the free [demo lines](https://callforme.tel/demo) let you hear a call before you place a real one.

## FAQ

### Can it pay for something over the phone?

No. It never reads out card numbers. If a business needs payment, the result says so and you pay directly, or you set transfer_to so you're patched in for that part.

### Can it verify my identity with my bank or carrier?

No, and it won't pretend to be you. It can wait on hold and connect you when a person answers, so you do the verification yourself.

### Does it always succeed?

No. Businesses don't answer, won't talk to an AI, won't quote without a visit, or need something only you have. The result says which, with outcome.type and a list of anything left unanswered.

### Can it call outside the US and Canada?

No. Only US and Canadian business numbers. You can use it from anywhere.
