# An AI assistant is calling your business: what to do

> Treat it like a customer calling through an assistant: someone asked for this call. Answer what you'd tell any caller, ask for a name and callback number when you need them, and keep account details for the account holder. To stop these calls, each service has its own opt-out: Google in your Business Profile, Meta through its form, CallForMe on its stop-calls page.

More of the calls your front desk gets now come from an assistant instead of the customer: Google's Ask for Me checking prices and availability, Gemini Call for Me and Meta Muse booking things, and agent tools like CallForMe placing a call that someone asked Claude or ChatGPT to make. They sound different, but behind each one is a person who wants something from you.

## How to recognize the call

- **The opener names who it's for.** CallForMe opens with "Hi, this is an assistant calling for Dana, on a recorded line." Others open in a similar way, often mentioning that the call is automated or recorded.
- **It sticks to one errand.** A price, an opening, a stock check, a reservation, a question about an order.
- **It may pause.** When you ask something the customer didn't cover ("patio or inside?"), the assistant may ask the customer and come back with the answer within a minute.

## How to handle it

1. **Answer like you would any caller.** Hours, prices, availability and what you need from the customer are all fine to share.
2. **Ask for what you'd normally need:** the customer's name, a callback number, the date, the order number. A good assistant has them or gets them while you wait.
3. **Keep account matters to the account holder.** For billing, medical or account details, ask for the account holder. CallForMe can connect them to the call, or take your direct number for them.
4. **Confirm it back.** Repeat the booking or the price at the end, the same as with any phone order. The assistant passes your exact words to the customer.
5. **Ask if you're unsure.** "Is this an automated call?" deserves a straight answer. If it doesn't get one, take a callback number and call the customer back.

## How to opt out, by service

| Service | How it reaches you | How to stop it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ask for Me / Gemini | Calls from Google about pricing and availability | Say "Please stop calling my business" on the call, or in your Business Profile go to More, Business Profile settings, Advanced settings, "Google automated calls and text messages" and turn off "Bookings and inquiries from customers" (the business must be verified first). Reply STOP to texts ([Google Business Profile help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7690269?hl=en)) |
| Meta Muse | Calls placed for a Muse user | Meta's [business opt-out form](https://help.meta.com/requests/1088631730352171/) (linked from [Meta Help](https://www.meta.com/help/artificial-intelligence/4532990443643263/)) |
| CallForMe | Calls from (469) 966-0062 for one of its customers | [Stop calls to your number](/for-businesses#stop), say so during a call, or email hello@greatwork.company; it covers every CallForMe customer |

Opting out has a cost: some of those calls were customers ready to book. Consider leaving them on and pointing them to the right line instead.

## Making routine calls of your own?

The same kind of assistant can place your business's calls: supplier price checks, vendor quotes, delivery confirmations, returning a call while you're busy. See [AI phone calls for small businesses](/guides/ai-phone-calls-for-small-business) and [return a business call](/use-cases/return-a-business-call), or hear one first on the [free demo lines](/demo).

## FAQ

### Is a call from an AI assistant a real customer?

Usually, yes. Google Ask for Me, Gemini Call for Me, Meta Muse and agent tools like CallForMe all call because a person asked their assistant to: for a price, a booking, a stock check or a question. The assistant is the customer's messenger.

### Can I ask whether it's an AI?

Yes, and you should get a straight answer. CallForMe's assistant says it's an AI whenever it's asked. If a caller won't say and you're unsure, ask for a callback number and call back. Google also warns that a caller asking for money to keep your business on Google isn't Google.

### What should staff not share?

The same things they wouldn't share with any third party: account details, card numbers, or anything that needs the account holder's identity. Offer to talk to the account holder directly; CallForMe's assistant can connect them to the call (transfer_to) or pass on a callback number.

### How do I stop these calls?

Each service has its own opt-out. Google: say "Please stop calling my business" on the call, or turn off "Bookings and inquiries from customers" in your Business Profile's advanced settings. Meta Muse: Meta's opt-out form for businesses. CallForMe: add your number on our stop-calls page or tell the assistant during a call; it then covers every CallForMe customer.
