# Why won't a business give a price over the phone?

> Many trades can't price a job without seeing it, and some worry about being held to a phone number. Instead of asking for an exact quote, ask for a range for a typical job, the visit or diagnostic fee, what's included, and the earliest opening. Those four answers are usually enough to compare businesses and pick one.

## The short answer

A lot of businesses won't give a firm price over the phone, to anyone. A plumber can't know how long a leak takes to fix until they see it. A roofer needs to measure. A shop may worry a customer will hold them to a number. That's true whether you call yourself or an AI calls for you.

The fix is to ask for the numbers they can give.

## How common it is

When Google's AI started phoning businesses for prices, call-tracking firm Invoca looked at the results: 26% of the calls went unanswered, and of the ones that were answered, 48% gave no price, mostly because staff couldn't estimate without seeing the job ([CXM, citing Invoca](https://cxm.world/digital-experience/googles-ai-is-phoning-businesses-for-pricing-and-many-arent-answering-survey-reveals/)). Answer rates were highest for auto shops and lowest for plumbing and vets.

## What to ask instead

For jobs that need a visit, these four questions nearly always get answered:

1. **A range for a typical job.** "What does a kitchen faucet install usually run?"
2. **The visit or diagnostic fee,** and whether it's credited toward the work.
3. **What's included.** Parts, labor, disposal, warranty.
4. **The earliest opening** for an estimate or the job.

With those, you can compare three or four businesses and book the one that fits. Here's a goal that works:

> Call the three best-rated plumbers near 75024. My kitchen faucet leaks at the base; I already have a new faucet. Ask for a typical price range to install it, their service call fee and whether it goes toward the job, and the earliest opening. Give me a table.

## Give them what they'd need to see

The more of the job you describe up front, the more likely you get a real number. Put it in `details`:

- **Cars:** year, make, model, trim, mileage, what the problem sounds like.
- **Home repair:** what's broken, how old it is, whether you have the part, the ZIP code.
- **Pets:** breed, weight, coat condition.
