# Will a business hang up on an AI call?

> Some will. Most people stay on when the caller says right away that it's an AI, who it's calling for, and exactly what it needs, and when it sounds natural. Hang-ups spike with robotic voices, vague openers and busy hours. When a business won't talk to an AI, CallForMe ends politely and your agent can suggest calling yourself.

## The short answer

Some businesses hang up on AI callers. It's the most common complaint across every product in this category, from Meta's Muse to consumer apps like Mitra and Dropcall. But it isn't most calls, and the reasons are predictable. People hang up on calls that sound like spam, waste their time, or feel deceptive. Calls that say what they are and what they want in the first breath mostly get answered.

## Why people hang up

**It sounds like a robocall.** Google's early Duplex calls "didn't sound very good" and "people would hang up on it," and adding natural pacing raised the success rate ([CBC](https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/google-prepping-its-duplex-bot-for-a-summer-rollout-1.4726013)). Slow, flat speech and fake background noise are what staff at restaurants complained about most in reporting on Muse ([36kr](https://eu.36kr.com/en/p/3995661047813769)).

**It doesn't get to the point.** A disclosure followed by a pause, or "do you have a few minutes?", gives the person time to decide it's spam.

**It's the wrong moment.** A host greeting guests at 7pm on a Friday has no time for any caller, human or not.

**Policy.** Some businesses won't deal with automated callers at all. An insurer "kept hanging up as soon as they heard it was AI" during Muse's beta ([PYMNTS](https://www.pymnts.com/news/artificial-intelligence/2026/meta-tests-human-callers-for-muse-after-merchants-hang-up-on-ai/)). Banks, carriers and insurers often need the account holder anyway.

**Deception.** When callers hide that they're AI, or a human pretends to be one, people react badly once they find out. Duplex's 2018 demo without disclosure drew a backlash, and Google added disclosure within days. Meta rolled back human callers in Muse after 404 Media reported them ([404 Media](https://www.404media.co/meta-tests-muse-ai-agent-calls-that-are-actually-made-by-humans-in-a-call-center/)).

## What keeps people on the line

- **Disclosure and the ask in one breath.** "Hi, this is an AI assistant calling for Sam, on a recorded line. I'd like to book a table for four this Friday around 7:30." The person knows what's calling and why before they've decided anything.
- **A natural voice and fast replies.** Long pauses sound like a dropped line. So does silence after the person answers a question.
- **Knowing the details already.** Party size, the car, the order number. A caller that has to ask for everything wastes their time.
- **Short and polite.** Ask, confirm, read back what matters, thank them, hang up.
- **The right time.** Restaurants between lunch and dinner. Service shops mid-morning. `plan_call` flags peak hours and whether the business is open now.

## What CallForMe does when they won't talk

If the person says they don't take automated calls, the assistant doesn't argue or try to talk them into it. It says you'll call directly, thanks them, and ends the call. The result comes back with `outcome.type` set to `refused_ai` and the summary says what they said, so your agent can:

- Suggest you call yourself, with the number and what to ask.
- Try again with `transfer_to`, so the assistant waits on hold and connects you once a person is on. That's the usual fix for banks, carriers and insurers. See [hold and patch in](/guides/ai-agent-hold-and-patch-in).
- Try a different business if it was a quote or stock check.

If they don't pick up at all, the call is free. If they pick up and refuse, it's an answered call ($1).

## What we don't do

We never hide that it's an AI, never claim to be you, and never route your call to a hidden human. If a business asks us not to call again, the number goes on an opt-out list for every CallForMe user. More in [safety and disclosure](/docs/safety-and-disclosure).

## Hear the opener yourself

Our free demo lines are fictional businesses run for testing. Ask your agent to call Maple Street Pizza at (469) 770-7412 and listen to how the opener lands, or see all of them on the [demo lines page](https://callforme.tel/demo). ## FAQ

### How often do businesses hang up on AI callers?

There's no neutral industry number yet. Reports range from insurers refusing every AI call to restaurants and shops that take them routinely. Google's early Duplex calls got more hang-ups until the voice and pacing improved.

### Does saying it's an AI make people hang up?

Hiding it is worse. Products that concealed AI, or used hidden human callers, got the loudest backlash. A clear disclosure followed straight away by a concrete request keeps most people on the line.

### Am I charged if they hang up?

If nobody answers, no. If someone answers and then hangs up or refuses, it's an answered call and costs $1. The result says refused_ai so you know what happened.

### What kinds of businesses refuse most?

Banks, carriers and insurers, because they need to verify the account holder. For those, have the assistant wait on hold and patch you in with transfer_to.

### Will the business call me back instead?

They may call back the number that called them, +1 (469) 966-0062. That line explains who we are and takes a message. Give your agent a callback_number if you'd rather they reach you directly.
