# Cancel car insurance by phone without a gap in coverage

> Start the new policy first, then give your agent the old policy number, the name and address on it, and the exact date the new coverage begins. CallForMe calls the insurer, waits through the menu and hold, asks to cancel effective that date, and gets the refund amount, any fee, and a confirmation number. It patches you in if they need to verify you.

**Say to your agent:** "Call my old car insurance company to cancel policy 4410-82-917 effective November 1, the day my new policy starts. Name on the policy Jordan Lee, address 418 Elm St, Plano TX. Decline offers. Ask the refund amount, how it's paid, and any cancellation fee, and get a confirmation number. Patch me in if they need to verify me."

Switching car insurance is two calls you don't want to make: one to buy, one to cancel. Buying is often online. Cancelling is often a phone menu and a retention rep. The order and the date matter more than anything said on the call, so this page covers both.

For other phone-only cancellations, see [companies you can only cancel by phone](/guides/companies-you-can-only-cancel-by-phone). To shop for the new policy first, see [auto insurance quotes from local agents](/use-cases/auto-insurance-quotes).

## Do it in this order

1. **Buy the new policy and note its start date.** Progressive's guide says to make sure the new policy is already in effect before cancelling, since nearly all states require liability coverage ([Progressive](https://www.progressive.com/answers/how-to-cancel-car-insurance/)). GEICO's page says the same thing: buy the new policy first so there's no gap ([GEICO](https://www.geico.com/information/faq/cancel-insurance/)).
2. **Cancel the old one effective that same date.** Not today, if today is earlier.
3. **Keep the confirmation.** The confirmation number, the effective date, and the refund amount, in the call transcript.

A gap can cost real money. In New York, for example, a lapse in coverage means either surrendering your plates or paying a civil penalty of $8 a day for the first 30 days, rising to $10 and then $12 a day ([NY DMV](https://dmv.ny.gov/insurance/pay-an-insurance-lapse-civil-penalty)). Other states have their own rules.

## Who makes you call

Some insurers handle cancellation only on the phone. GEICO's cancellation page tells customers to call (800) 841-1587 and, at the voice menu, say "cancel insurance policy" and then "auto," with the policy number ready ([GEICO](https://www.geico.com/information/faq/cancel-insurance/), checked October 9, 2026). Progressive's guide notes that some insurers let you cancel by phone or online, while others require written notice or a signed document. If yours asks for a signed form, the call still gets you the form, the address to send it to, and the date it takes effect.

Check your insurer's site or app first. If cancelling there is a button, use it. If it's a phone number, hand the call to your agent.

## What your agent sends

The insurer will ask for the policy number, the policyholder's name, and the address or phone on the policy, and may verify you before cancelling. Put all of it in details so the rep doesn't wait.

<details><summary>What your agent sends (for developers)</summary>

```json
{
  "phone": "+18005550199",
  "goal": "Cancel auto policy 4410-82-917 effective November 1, 2026. Decline retention offers once and ask again to cancel. Get the refund amount, how it's paid, any cancellation fee, and a confirmation number.",
  "details": "Policyholder: Jordan Lee. Policy number 4410-82-917. Address on the policy: 418 Elm St, Plano TX. Reason: switched insurers; new policy starts November 1.",
  "questions": [
    "What is the confirmation number?",
    "What is the exact effective date and time of the cancellation?",
    "How much will be refunded, how, and when?",
    "Is there a cancellation fee?",
    "Will you send written confirmation, and where?"
  ],
  "on_behalf_of": "Jordan Lee",
  "transfer_to": "+12145550137",
  "constraints": "Do not cancel effective any date other than November 1. Do not accept changes to the policy."
}
```

</details>

Use the phone number printed on your policy documents or the insurer's own site, not a number from a search ad. Your agent can look it up with **find_business**, but the policy paperwork is the safer source.

## Example result

Illustrative example: names, prices and times are made up. Transcript excerpt:

> **Assistant:** Hi, this is an AI assistant calling for Jordan Lee, on a recorded line. Jordan would like to cancel auto policy 4410-82-917, effective November 1st.
> **Rep:** I can help with that. Can I ask why Jordan is leaving us?
> **Assistant:** Jordan has switched insurers and the new policy starts November 1st.
> **Rep:** I can look at a lower rate if Jordan wants to stay.
> **Assistant:** Thank you, Jordan has decided. Please go ahead with the cancellation effective November 1st.
> **Rep:** Done. Your confirmation is C-7731-0942. There's a refund of $212.40 back to the card on file in 7 to 10 business days, and no cancellation fee.

What your agent tells you: "Cancelled effective November 1, confirmation C-7731-0942. Refund $212.40 to your card in 7 to 10 business days, no fee. They offered a lower rate; declined."

## What trips these calls up

- **Cancelling too early.** "Effective today" when the new policy starts next week leaves you uninsured in between. The `constraints` line above stops the assistant agreeing to any other date.
- **Verification.** Some insurers want the policyholder on the line. With `transfer_to` set, your phone rings only for that part.
- **A lender on the policy.** If the car is financed or leased, the lender typically requires comprehensive and collision coverage (per Progressive's guide above). Make sure the new policy has both and lists the lender before the old one ends.
- **Written-notice insurers.** If they need a signed form, ask where to send it and what date it takes effect.

## What it costs

$1 per answered call, including the first 2 minutes, then $0.40 a minute, up to 30 minutes. Hold time counts: 9 minutes on the line is $1 + 7 x $0.40 = $3.80. If the line is busy or nobody answers, it's free.

## FAQ

### Do insurers make you call to cancel auto insurance?

Some do. GEICO's cancellation page, checked October 9, 2026, tells customers to call and say 'cancel insurance policy' and then 'auto' at the voice menu. Progressive notes that some insurers allow phone or online cancellation and others require written notice or a signed form.

### When should the old policy end?

On the day the new one starts, not before. Nearly every state requires liability coverage, and a lender or lease company usually requires comprehensive and collision too. Ask the old insurer to cancel effective the new policy's start date.

### Will I get money back?

Usually, if you paid ahead. Insurers generally refund the unused part of the premium, though some states and timing allow a cancellation fee. GEICO, for example, says it charges no cancellation fee, except that North Carolina policies may use a short-rate calculation. Your agent asks for the amount and how it's paid.

### Can the assistant cancel without me?

Sometimes, with the policy number and the name and address on the policy. If the insurer insists on speaking with the policyholder, set transfer_to and the assistant connects you for that step only. It never reads out card numbers or passwords.
