# Dispute a credit card charge by phone with your agent

> Give your agent the card's customer service number, the charge (merchant, amount, date) and what went wrong. CallForMe calls, works the menu, explains the charge, and connects you when the card company verifies the cardholder. It brings back a case number, what happens next, and the address for the written billing-error notice, which federal rules want within 60 days of the statement.

**Say to your agent:** "Call the number on the back of my Visa, 1-800-555-0123, and dispute an $89.99 charge from QuickFit Online dated October 28 that I didn't authorize. Ask them to open a dispute, get a case number, ask whether they'll put a temporary credit on the account, and get the mailing address for a written billing-error notice. When they verify the cardholder, connect me at (214) 555-0147."

A charge you don't recognize, a double charge, or something you paid for that never came: the fix starts with a call to the number on the back of the card. Your agent can make it, sit through the menu, explain the charge, and come back with a case number and the next steps.

## What your agent does

1. **Calls the card company** at the customer service number you give it (the one on the back of the card or on your statement).
2. **Works the menu** to disputes or the fraud department, and explains the charge: merchant, amount, date, and what went wrong.
3. **Connects you to verify.** Card companies confirm the cardholder before opening a dispute. With your number as `transfer_to`, the assistant patches you in for that step.
4. **Gets the details**: a case or reference number, whether a temporary credit applies, what happens next and when, and where to send the written notice.

## What to give your agent

- The card company's customer service number and the card type (no card number).
- The charge: merchant name as it appears on the statement, amount, date.
- What went wrong: not authorized, charged twice, wrong amount, or paid for something that never came.
- Your number, as `transfer_to`, for the verification step.

## Send the written notice too

The CFPB says a call isn't the whole job: to protect your rights under federal billing-error rules, send a written notice within 60 calendar days after the charge appeared on your statement, and keep copies ([CFPB](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/how-do-i-dispute-a-charge-on-my-credit-card-bill-en-61/), last reviewed April 15, 2024). The assistant asks for the address or online form, so you have it before you hang up. Disputes over defective goods or services can follow a different process; the card company will say which applies.

## What it costs

$1 per answered call, including the first 2 minutes, then $0.40 a minute, up to 30 minutes. A 10-minute call with a hold is $4.20. Set `max_cost_usd` to cap a long hold.

## FAQ

### Does a phone call count as disputing the charge?

It starts it. The CFPB says to call the card company right away, and to also send a written notice within 60 days after the charge appeared on your statement to protect your rights. The assistant asks for the address or online form to use.

### Will the assistant give my card number?

No. CallForMe never reads card numbers, security codes or one-time codes aloud. Card companies verify the cardholder, so pass your number as transfer_to and the assistant connects you for that step.

### What happens after I dispute?

Per the CFPB, the company has 30 days to confirm it got your written dispute. If you're right, the charge must be removed; if not, it must tell you why in writing. This is general information, not legal advice.

### Can it dispute a debit card charge?

It can make the call and report it the same way. The rules for debit cards are different from credit cards, so the assistant asks the bank what applies and reports exactly what they say.
