Can an AI call a business at night? Quiet hours explained
CallForMe calls businesses between 7am and 10pm in the business's local time, worked out from its area code. Late at night your agent gets a quiet hours reply instead of a ringing phone. For places that are open late, like a 24-hour pharmacy or a hotel front desk, your agent can pass after_hours to call anyway.
The short answer
CallForMe doesn't ring businesses at night. Between 10pm and 7am in the business's local time, calls are held back. The person who answers a 10:45pm call at a dental office is usually a cleaner or an answering service, so the call wouldn't get you anything anyway.
How it works
When your agent places a call, CallForMe checks the local time at the business from its area code:
- 7am to 10pm: the call goes out.
- 10pm to 7am: the call is blocked before anything dials. Your agent gets the code
QUIET_HOURS, the local time at the business ("It's 10:40 PM at that business"), and what to do next.
Demo lines don't follow quiet hours. You can rehearse at any hour.
The exception: places open late
Some places do pick up at night: 24-hour pharmacies, hotel front desks, some towing companies and emergency vets. For those, your agent passes after_hours: true and the call goes out. Ask in plain words: "The pharmacy on Preston is open 24 hours, call them now and ask if my prescription is ready."
Call around at night
If you start a call around batch late in the evening, places in quiet hours aren't skipped. They wait in the queue and get called after 7am their time. Your agent can check on the batch in the morning with get_batch, and results also arrive by email for signed-in accounts.
Best times to call
Inside the window, timing still matters:
- Restaurants: mid-afternoon, between lunch and dinner.
- Medical and dental offices: right after they open, or early afternoon.
- Banks, carriers and insurers: first thing in the morning, mid-week, for shorter hold times. See phone menus and hold.
plan_call tells your agent whether the business is open right now and suggests a good time before you spend anything.
Questions
How does it know the business's time zone?
From the area code of the number. Toll-free numbers have no fixed location, so they're never in quiet hours.
What happens if I ask at midnight?
A single call comes back blocked with the code QUIET_HOURS, the business's local time, and a suggestion. Your agent can try in the morning, or use after_hours if the place is open.
Do call around batches stop at night?
No, they wait. Places in quiet hours are queued and called after 7am their time, so a batch you start at night finishes in the morning.
Does a blocked call cost anything?
No. Nothing is dialed, so nothing is charged.
