Have your AI agent call a Medicaid or benefits office for you

Short answer: Tell your agent what you need from the office and give it your case or application number. CallForMe calls, works the menu, waits on hold, and asks the question. When the office needs to verify the person on the case, it connects you with transfer_to, so you only pick up once someone is on the line. If it reaches voicemail, it can leave your message and callback number.

“Call the county social services office and ask what documents they still need for my Medicaid renewal. My case number is 4410-2287. If they need to verify me, connect me at (214) 555-0147.”

Calls to a Medicaid, SNAP or county social services office follow a pattern: a long menu, a long hold, and often an identity check or a voicemail box at the end. That's the part your agent can take off your hands.

What your agent does

  1. Finds the right number with find_business, or uses the one on your notice or the agency's website.
  2. Places the call with your goal, your case or application number in details, and your phone number as transfer_to.
  3. Works the menu and waits. The assistant asks for a representative, answers routing questions it knows the answer to, and stays on hold up to 30 minutes.
  4. Asks your question or connects you. General questions it can ask itself. When the office needs to verify the person on the case, it connects you and stays out of the way.
  5. Reports back with what they said, any reference number, and a transcript.

Good errands for these calls

  • Which documents a renewal or application still needs.
  • Whether something you mailed or uploaded was received.
  • Office hours, the fax number, or the mailing address for a form.
  • Leaving a message with your case number when the line goes to voicemail.
  • Booking or confirming an interview appointment.

What to give your agent

  • Your case number or application ID, and the county or state program.
  • The question, in one sentence.
  • Your phone number for transfer_to, if they may need to verify you.
  • A callback number to leave on voicemail.

Don't give it a Social Security number to read out. If the office or its menu asks for one, the assistant connects you instead.

Timing

Public benefits lines tend to be busiest on Mondays and right after a holiday. Call a few minutes after opening, mid-week, or have your agent schedule the call with call_at. When we timed 19 big customer service lines on one Monday morning, Social Security took 20 minutes 23 seconds to reach a person (customer service hold times, measured).

What it costs

$1 per answered call, including the first 2 minutes, then $0.40 a minute, up to 30 minutes. A call nobody answers costs nothing. A long hold costs the most, so max_cost_usd lets your agent cap any single call.

Questions

Will the office talk to an AI assistant?

Many will answer general questions: office hours, what a form is, which documents a renewal needs, whether something arrived. Anything about the case itself usually needs the person on the case. Pass your number as transfer_to and the assistant connects you once a person answers.

Will it give my Social Security number?

No. CallForMe never reads Social Security numbers, card numbers or one-time codes aloud. When a menu or a person asks for one, the assistant connects you to give it yourself.

What if the line hangs up or goes to voicemail?

Busy public lines sometimes drop calls. A call that doesn't connect costs nothing, and your agent can redial. On voicemail, the assistant can leave your name, case number and callback number.

Can it call before the office opens?

Your agent can schedule the call with call_at, for example a few minutes after the office opens, when queues are usually shortest.
