Request an Itemized Medical Bill and Ask for a Self-Pay Discount
Your agent gives CallForMe the billing office number, the account number, and what to ask. The voice agent requests an itemized statement, asks about self-pay or prompt-pay discounts and payment plans, and records the answers. Billing offices often verify the patient first, so set transfer_to and it patches you in when they do.
What you say to your agent
Call the Riverside Medical Center billing office about my Aug 12 ER visit, account 77120. Ask them to mail an itemized bill, and ask if they offer a self-pay discount or a payment plan. Patch me in if they need to verify me.
An itemized bill is the first step in checking a medical bill line by line. Asking for one, and asking what discounts exist, is a routine call that tends to involve a long hold.
What your agent does
- find_business looks up "Riverside Medical Center billing" near you and checks whether the office is open right now. The number on your statement is usually better, so your agent prefers it if you have it.
- plan_call writes the opener, lists your questions, and warns that the office will likely ask for the patient's date of birth.
- place_call dials:
{
"phone": "+15125550188",
"business_name": "Riverside Medical Center Billing",
"goal": "Request a mailed itemized bill for the Aug 12, 2026 ER visit and learn what self-pay discounts or payment plans are available.",
"details": "Patient: Sam Patel. Account number 77120. Date of service Aug 12, 2026. Mailing address on file is current.",
"questions": ["Can you mail an itemized bill with CPT codes?", "Do you offer a self-pay or prompt-pay discount, and how much?", "What payment plans are available?"],
"on_behalf_of": "Sam Patel",
"transfer_to": "+15125550163",
"constraints": "Do not agree to any payment or plan. Gather options only."
}
- get_call polls until
ended. If the rep asks "is this for the self-pay balance or the insurance portion?", your agent sees apending_questionand answers with answer_question.

Example transcript excerpt:
Voice agent: Hi, I'm an automated assistant calling on behalf of Sam Patel. I'm calling to request an itemized bill for account 7 7 1 2 0. Rep: I can request that. It'll go to the address on file in 7 to 10 days. For discounts, we have a prompt-pay discount if the balance is paid in full within 30 days. Voice agent: How much is the prompt-pay discount? Rep: 20 percent off the self-pay balance.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Itemized bill | Requested, mailed in 7 to 10 days, includes CPT codes |
| Self-pay discount | 20% prompt-pay discount if paid in full within 30 days |
| Payment plans | Up to 12 months, no interest, set up by phone or portal |
Tips
- Ask for "itemized with CPT codes." A summary statement doesn't help you check charges.
- Ask the discount question before you pay anything. Some discounts only apply to unpaid balances.
- Put the account number and date of service in
details. Leave out anything you don't want repeated to the office. - Set
transfer_toso verification doesn't end the call.
What it costs
$1 if it's wrapped up within 5 minutes of someone answering. A 12 minute hold plus a 3 minute talk is 15 minutes: $1 plus 10 minutes at $0.25, so $3.50. Unanswered calls are free.

Questions
Can the voice agent get my medical details?
Probably not without you. Under HIPAA, billing staff usually verify the patient before discussing an account. The voice agent asks general questions and patches you in with transfer_to when they need verification.
Will it agree to a payment plan for me?
Only inside the limits you set in constraints. By default it gathers the options and reports back so you decide.
Does it share my insurance ID or date of birth?
Only what you put in details. It never gives card numbers, SSNs, or passwords over the phone.
What if the office is closed?
plan_call includes an open-now check, and find_business returns hours when available, so your agent can wait until they open.
