Ask the dealership if your plates or registration came in

Short answer: Give your agent the dealership, the name the car was bought under and the phone number on the deal. CallForMe calls, works the menu to sales or the title office, asks whether your plates or registration have arrived and when they will if not, and reports back with a name and next steps. Most of these calls cost $1.

“Call Lakeside Ford sales and ask whether the plates for the SUV I bought two weeks ago have come in. It's under Morgan Lee, phone 214-555-0142. If they haven't, get an ETA and ask what to do if my temporary tag runs out first.”

The car is home, the paper tag is on, and the plates are "a couple of weeks out." Finding out where they are means a phone menu, a transfer to the title office and often a hold. Your agent can make that call and hand you the answer.

What your agent does

  1. find_business confirms the dealership's number and whether it's open now. Sales and title offices often close earlier than the showroom.
  2. plan_call checks what the dealer will ask for (the name on the deal, the phone number, a VIN or stock number) and tells you what's missing.
  3. place_call dials, picks sales or "all other inquiries" in the menu, and asks for whoever handles titles and plates:

  1. get_call with wait_seconds: 45 follows the call. If the clerk goes to check with a manager, the assistant waits on the line and picks the conversation back up when they return.

Example result

Illustrative example: the dealership, names and dates are made up. Transcript excerpt:

Voice agent: Hi, this is an assistant calling for Morgan Lee, on a recorded line. I'm checking whether the plates for an SUV Morgan bought about two weeks ago have come in. Clerk: What's the phone number on the deal? Voice agent: Two one four, five five five, zero one four two. Clerk: One second, let me check with the title office. Hello? Voice agent: Yes, I'm here. Clerk: They came in yesterday. Pick them up at the front desk, 9 to 7, with a photo ID.

Question Answer
Plates arrived? Yes, yesterday
Pickup Front desk, 9 AM to 7 PM, bring photo ID
Temporary tag Not needed, plates are in

Your agent's summary: "Plates are in. Pick them up at the front desk with your ID, any day 9 to 7."

Tips

  • Include the name the car was bought under, and the business name if it was a company purchase. Dealers file deals by either.
  • A VIN or stock number gets you transferred faster. It's on the bill of sale or the paper tag paperwork.
  • Ask for the clerk's name and an ETA in writing, so a follow-up call can pick up where this one left off.
  • Calling after hours? Ask your agent to check the hours first, or to call again in the morning.

What it costs

Usually $1: menus and a short hold fit in the first 2 minutes. A long transfer runs 40 cents a minute after that. If nobody answers, it's free.

Questions

Who at the dealership handles plates?

Usually the title or registration clerk, sometimes called the title office or business office; at smaller stores it's your salesperson. The assistant asks the operator or the sales desk to transfer it to whoever handles titles and plates.

What will they ask for?

The name on the purchase and often the phone number or address on the deal. A VIN, stock number or deal number helps them find it faster. Put whatever you have in details, and anything else comes back to your agent mid-call.

What if my temporary tag is about to expire?

Ask the dealer directly what they'll do: many can issue or extend a temporary tag while the plates are delayed, but the rules depend on your state. Add the question to your call so the answer comes back in writing.

What if the dealership is closed?

Sales and title offices often keep shorter hours than the showroom. CallForMe looks the dealership up while it dials and warns your agent when it looks closed; if it reaches voicemail in the first minute, there's no charge.
