Companies you can only cancel by phone, by category

We make CallForMe, which places these calls for you. This list is by category on purpose: cancellation rules differ by company, plan and state, so check your own account before you call.

Short answer: Gyms, alarm monitoring, print newspapers and magazines, satellite TV, insurance policies, home and extended warranties, and local service contracts often still need a phone call to cancel. Have the account number and the phone or address on file ready, ask for a confirmation number and the final billing date, and decline retention offers you don't want.

“Call to cancel my alarm monitoring service. Account 88-41207, phone on the account 214-555-0137, name on the account Priya Shah. Decline any offers, patch me in if they need to verify me, and get a confirmation number and the final billing date.”

Signing up is usually a button. Cancelling is often a phone number, a menu with no "cancel" option, a hold queue, and a rep paid to talk you out of it. Below are the kinds of subscriptions and contracts that most often still need that call, why, what the rep will ask you for, and a prompt you can paste into your agent so it makes the call for you. For the step-by-step version of a single cancellation, see cancel a subscription by phone.

Check your account page first

Many companies that used to be phone-only now offer another way, at least on some plans. Two examples, both checked on the company's own help pages in October 2026:

  • SiriusXM lists three ways to cancel a direct-billed subscription: the Subscriptions tab in the online account center, chat, or a phone call (SiriusXM help). Subscriptions billed through another company are cancelled with that company.
  • DIRECTV lets customers with internet-based service (no satellite dish) cancel online after signing in. For other service it points you to a phone line or chat (DIRECTV cancel help).

So spend a minute on the account page or the help center first. If the only path is a phone number, or the online option isn't offered on your plan, that's where your agent takes over.

The categories that still mean a phone call

Gyms and fitness clubs

Memberships are often signed in person, with terms that ask for notice in person, by mail, or by phone, and a notice period before the last charge. The front desk may not be able to cancel, and the corporate line may only take requests during business hours. See cancel a gym membership for the full walkthrough.

What the rep asks for: the name on the account, the member number, and the phone, email or address on file. plan_call flags all three for any "cancel my membership" goal.

Call my gym to cancel my membership. Member number 4471023, phone on the account 214-555-0137, name Jordan Lee. Decline offers to freeze or downgrade. Ask whether there's a notice period, what the last charge will be and on what date, and get a confirmation number.

Alarm and home security monitoring

Monitoring contracts often run for multi-year terms, come with equipment, and carry an early termination fee if you cancel before the term ends. Cancellation usually goes through a retention team.

What the rep asks for: name on the account, account number, the service address or phone on file, and sometimes a passcode. The assistant never says passcodes or PINs, so if they require one, set transfer_to and you give it yourself.

Call to cancel my alarm monitoring service. Account 88-41207, phone on the account 214-555-0137, name on the account Priya Shah. Decline any offers, patch me in if they need to verify me, and get a confirmation number and the final billing date.

Print newspapers and magazines

Print subscriptions are tied to a delivery address and a billing cycle, and many publishers handle print accounts through a circulation or customer service line rather than the website.

What the rep asks for: the name and delivery address, and the account number from your bill if you have it.

Call to cancel my newspaper subscription, print and digital. Account number 5520918, delivery address 2210 Ridgeview Ln, Plano TX, name Sam Ortiz. Ask for the final billing date and whether any unused prepaid weeks are refunded, and get a confirmation number.

Satellite TV and satellite radio

Satellite service involves equipment, and the account may be bundled with other services or billed through a carrier or car maker. Online cancel, where it exists, often covers only some plans (see the DIRECTV example above).

What the rep asks for: the account holder's name, the account number, the phone or address on file, and often a verification code. Ask how to return any equipment and whether there's a fee if you don't.

Call to cancel my satellite TV service. Account 7731045, phone on the account 469-555-0182, name Dana Park. Decline offers. Ask how to return the receiver, the deadline, any fee for not returning it, and get a confirmation number and the final billing date. Patch me in if they need to verify me.

Insurance policies

Renters, auto, life and other policies are usually cancelled through the insurer or your agent, often with a cancellation date you pick and a prorated refund. Insurers verify the policyholder.

What the rep asks for: name, policy number, the address or phone on the policy, and for insurance goals plan_call also flags date of birth. It also suggests transfer_to, since insurers often verify the account holder directly.

Call my renters insurance company to cancel my policy effective November 1. Policy number RP-3318820, address on the policy 418 Elm St Apt 3, Denver CO, name Alex Rivera, date of birth 04/12/1990. Ask if I'll get a prorated refund and how it's paid, and get a confirmation number. Patch me in if they need to verify me.

Home warranties and extended warranties

Service contracts for a home, an appliance or a car often renew yearly and are cancelled by calling the administrator named in the contract. Ask about a prorated refund and any cancellation fee before agreeing to anything.

What the rep asks for: the contract or account number, the name on it, and the covered address or the vehicle. plan_call recognizes the number when it sits next to the word account, member or policy, so write "account number" even if your paperwork says contract number.

Call to cancel my home warranty plan. Account number HW-90214, covered address 2210 Ridgeview Ln, Plano TX, name Priya Shah. Ask about a prorated refund and any cancellation fee, and get a confirmation number.

Internet, cable and phone service

Carriers verify the account holder, and the cancel option often sits behind the retention team. If what you want is a lower bill rather than a cancellation, see negotiate your internet bill.

What the rep asks for: name, account number, the service address, and usually a PIN or a code sent to you. Plan on transfer_to for this one.

Call my internet provider to cancel my service. Account 6602914, service address 1450 Oak Ave, Austin TX, name Chris Moore. Decline offers, patch me in when they need to verify me, and ask how to return the modem and the final billing date.

Local service contracts (lawn care, pest control, pool service)

Small local companies bill monthly or per visit, often with no online account at all. A call is the only way to stop the next visit.

What the rep asks for: name and service address. plan_call reads these as trades calls, so it also flags a date. Say when you want service to stop.

Call my pest control company to cancel my quarterly service effective November 1. Account 30915, service address 77 Birch Ct, Raleigh NC, name Morgan Hale. Ask if any prepaid visit is refunded and get a confirmation.

What the law says, briefly

This is a summary, not legal advice.

  • The federal click-to-cancel rule is gone, for now. The FTC's Negative Option Rule would have required a way to cancel at least as easy as signing up. The Eighth Circuit vacated it on July 8, 2025, holding that the FTC skipped a required step in the rulemaking (Custom Communications v. FTC, No. 24-3137). The lead petitioner was an alarm company, and the parties supporting the challenge included associations for health clubs, service contracts, and property and casualty insurers.
  • Federal law still covers online subscriptions. The Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act requires sellers of negative option plans online to provide "simple mechanisms" to stop recurring charges (15 U.S.C. 8403).
  • California. A business that lets you accept an automatic renewal online must let you cancel online, at will, through a prominent link or button or a prepared termination email. Cancellation must be available in the same medium you used to sign up, and any retention offer has to sit next to a "click to cancel" button. The amendments apply to contracts entered into, amended or extended on or after July 1, 2025 (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code 17602).
  • Minnesota. Sellers whose websites offer profile or subscription management must include a clear termination option on the site (Minn. Stat. 325G.60). If a seller never sent the required confirmation, you can cancel by any reasonable means, including by phone (Minn. Stat. 325G.59).

If a company makes cancelling harder than your state allows, note that in your complaint to the company or your state attorney general, and keep the call transcript.

How your agent handles the call

  1. find_business for the cancellation or customer service number, or use the number on your statement.
  2. plan_call with your goal. Any "cancel my ... membership, subscription, service, plan, policy or contract" goal lands in the cancel category and flags the name on the account, the account number, and the phone, email or address on file. Put all three in details so the rep doesn't wait while your agent asks you.
  3. place_call with transfer_to set to your phone if the company verifies the account holder. The assistant works the menu, waits on hold, asks to cancel, declines offers if you said to, and connects you only for the verification step. See have an AI wait on hold and patch you in.
  4. get_call until it ends. You get the confirmation number, the final billing date, any offer they made, and the transcript.

The assistant never reads out card numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords or PINs. If the company needs one, that's your part of the call.

What it costs

$1 per answered call, including the first 2 minutes, then $0.40 a minute, up to 30 minutes. Hold time counts, so a long cancellation queue costs more: 15 minutes on the line is $1 + 13 x $0.40 = $6.20. If the line is busy or nobody answers, it's free.

Questions

Isn't there a federal rule that lets me cancel online?

The FTC adopted a click-to-cancel rule in 2024, but the Eighth Circuit vacated it on July 8, 2025, before it took full effect. Federal law still requires simple ways to stop recurring charges for subscriptions sold online, and several states have their own rules. This is not legal advice.

If I signed up online, do I have to call to cancel?

In California, for contracts entered into, amended or extended on or after July 1, 2025, a business that let you sign up online has to let you cancel online, and cancellation has to be available in the medium you used to sign up. Other states differ. Check your state's automatic renewal law.

Can the assistant cancel without me on the line?

Often, if the company accepts the account number plus the phone, email or address on file. When they insist on verifying the account holder with a code or security question, set transfer_to and the assistant patches you in for that step only.

What should I keep after the call?

The confirmation number, the rep's name if given, the final billing date and the call transcript. If a charge shows up after that date, that is what you send your card issuer.

Will you name the companies that are phone-only?

Only where we checked the company's own help page, with the date we checked. Policies change, and many depend on the plan or your state, so a list of brand names goes stale fast.
