Windshield replacement quotes with camera calibration

Short answer: Give your agent the car's year, make, model and VIN, plus features like a windshield camera, rain sensor or heads-up display. CallForMe calls auto glass shops near you and asks each for the total price including camera calibration, OEM or aftermarket glass, mobile service, and the soonest slot. Calibration is where quotes differ most. Each answered call is $1.

“Call 5 auto glass shops near 33614 for a windshield replacement on a 2021 Toyota RAV4 XLE with the lane-keeping camera and a rain sensor, VIN 2T3P1RFV5MC123456. Ask the total price including camera calibration, OEM or aftermarket glass, whether they come to me, and the soonest slot.”

A cracked windshield used to be one quick price. On a newer car, the windshield holds the camera for lane keeping and automatic braking, and the quote depends on whether that camera gets calibrated, which glass goes in, and whether the shop does it at all. Your agent can ask every shop the same questions so you compare totals, not teaser prices.

Why calibration changes the quote

IIHS writes that a simple windshield replacement can cost as little as $250, but cars with front crash prevention were much more likely to have glass claims of $1,000 or more, with much of the extra cost likely related to calibration. Automakers stipulate calibration anytime a sensor is removed and replaced or reinstalled. In an IIHS survey, about two-thirds of owners whose crash avoidance repairs involved a windshield replacement reported issues with the technology afterward (IIHS).

So the questions that matter are: is calibration in the price, is it done in-house or sent to a dealer, and is it static, dynamic, or both, as the automaker specifies.

Questions worth asking

  • Total price with calibration, out the door?
  • OEM, OEM-equivalent or aftermarket glass, and the price of each?
  • Calibration in-house or at a dealer? Static, dynamic or both?
  • Mobile service, or does calibration require the shop?
  • How long before you can drive the car, and is there a warranty on leaks?
  • Do you bill my insurer directly?

Shop Total Glass Calibration Mobile Soonest
Busch Blvd Auto Glass $689 Aftermarket Included, in-house Glass yes, calibration at shop Tue
Tampa Bay Glass Pros $845 OEM Included, in-house No Wed
Sligh Ave Windshields $420 + dealer calibration Aftermarket Sent to dealer, you book it Yes Mon
Armenia Glass & Tint $910 OEM Included Yes Thu

One shop didn't answer, which cost nothing. Your agent's summary: "Sligh looks cheapest but leaves calibration to you at a dealer, so the real total is higher. Busch Blvd is $689 all in with in-house calibration, Tuesday. Armenia is OEM and fully mobile at $910."

What trips these calls up

  • Teaser prices. A glass-only price leaves calibration as a second bill. Asking for the total including calibration fixes that.
  • Missing VIN. The same model can take different windshields depending on its features. Without the VIN, a shop may quote a part that doesn't match your car.
  • Insurance. In Florida, the comprehensive deductible doesn't apply to windshield damage under Fla. Stat. 627.7288. Elsewhere, check your policy before you choose cash or a claim.

What it costs

Five shops, four answer, three within 2 minutes and one at 4 minutes: $1 + $1 + $1 + $1.80 = $4.80. Unanswered calls are free.

Questions

Why ask about calibration?

IIHS says windshield replacements often make it necessary to calibrate crash avoidance cameras and sensors, notes automakers stipulate calibration whenever a sensor is removed and reinstalled, and that cars with front crash prevention were much more likely to have glass claims of $1,000 or more, much of it likely calibration.

Should I use my insurance?

Check your comprehensive coverage. In Florida, state law says the comprehensive deductible doesn't apply to windshield damage. Elsewhere it depends on your policy. Your agent can ask each shop whether it bills your insurer directly.

What does the shop need from me?

Year, make, model and trim, the VIN, and the windshield features: camera, rain sensor, heated wiper area, heads-up display, acoustic glass. The VIN lets them find the exact part.

Can the assistant book the job?

Yes. After you pick from the table, your agent calls back to book, with the address for mobile service or your drop-off time in details.
