Is it safe to let an AI agent make phone calls for you?
Short answer: Yes, with the right limits. CallForMe's assistant says it's calling for you on a recorded line, never gives card numbers, Social Security numbers or passwords, won't agree to anything past the limits you set, and runs on prepaid credit you can cap per call. Only your account can hear the recording.
The short answer
Letting an AI agent phone a business for you is as safe as the limits around it. Here are the ones CallForMe puts in place, and the ones you control.
It says who it is, and who it's calling for
Every call starts with:
Hi, this is an assistant calling for {your name}, on a recorded line.
It never claims to be you or a person and doesn't use your voice. If someone asks whether it's an AI, it says yes. If a business won't talk to an automated caller, it doesn't argue: it says you'll call them yourself and ends the call. More in safety and disclosure.
It never says your secrets out loud
Whatever your agent passes along, the assistant never gives these over the phone:
- Payment card numbers
- Social Security numbers
- Passwords or PINs
If the business needs one, the assistant says you'll provide it directly. For calls where only the account holder can verify (banks, carriers, airlines), add transfer_to with your phone number and the assistant connects you at that point. It also never reads out one-time verification codes. See verification codes on AI calls.
It only agrees to what you allowed
Put your limits in constraints, such as a price ceiling, "quotes only" or "weekday mornings only", and the assistant treats them as hard lines. When the business asks something your agent didn't cover, the assistant asks your agent mid-call and waits about 45 seconds instead of making something up. If no answer comes, it tells the business you'll follow up and lists the open point in the result.
Spending is capped
- Prepaid: calls draw from credit you add, so they can't spend more than your balance. Auto-reload is optional and can be turned off on your account page.
- Per call: pass
max_cost_usdand the call ends itself at that amount, so a long hold can't run up the bill. $3 is about 7 minutes. - Per account: set "pause agent calls under $X" on your account page to keep a floor your agent can't spend below.
- Free when nothing happens: nobody answering, a busy line, or a call that goes straight to voicemail costs nothing.
- Time limit: every call ends by 30 minutes, including hold.
Prices are on the pricing page.
Your data stays yours
Calls are recorded and transcribed so you get exact answers, and the opener tells the business it's a recorded line. Only the account that placed a call can hear the recording. A shared call shows the transcript with your name, phone numbers and email addresses hidden, and no audio.
It only calls businesses
CallForMe calls US and Canadian businesses about your own errands. It won't call emergency or N11 numbers or premium 900 numbers, it caps how often any one number can be called, and a business that says "don't call" goes on an opt-out list for every user. Telemarketing, harassment and impersonation are against the terms. For the legal side, see is it legal for AI to call a business?
Try it with nothing at stake
The free demo lines are fictional businesses, so you can hear exactly how the assistant talks before it calls anyone real: Maple Street Pizza at (469) 770-7412, no account or card needed. See demo lines.
Questions
Will the AI pretend to be me?
No. It opens with "Hi, this is an assistant calling for {your name}, on a recorded line." It never claims to be you or a person, doesn't use your voice, and says it's an AI assistant whenever someone asks.
Can it read out my credit card number?
No. The assistant never says payment card numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords or PINs, even if they're in the details your agent passed. If a business needs one, it says you'll provide it directly. Use transfer_to to be patched in for that part.
Could it agree to something I didn't want?
Your constraints are hard limits. "Don't agree to more than $200" means it won't agree to $201, and "quotes only, don't book" means it won't book. When the business asks something it can't answer, it asks your agent mid-call instead of guessing.
Could a call run up a big bill?
CallForMe is prepaid, so it can't spend more than your balance. Each call can be capped with max_cost_usd (the call ends itself at that amount), every call ends by 30 minutes, and your account page has a "pause agent calls under $X" setting. Nobody answering costs nothing.
Who can hear the recording?
Only the account that placed the call. If you share a call, the share page shows the transcript with your name, phone numbers and email addresses hidden, and no audio.
